Genie was knocked out in the first round for the third straight year at the Mutua Madrid Open in Madrid, Spain by Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania. Genie lost 4-6 6-3 4-6 in two hours and 32 minutes.
This was Genie’s first tournament in nearly four weeks after having to withdraw from the Volvo Car Open in Charleston due to an abdominal injury.
Genie started the match quickly as she went 4-1 up in the first set, but lost five straight games as she dropped the first set 6-4.
In the second set, Genie took a 3-0 lead and then won three of the next six games to take the set 6-3.
The third set was close but Genie dropped her serve in the final game as she hit three errors as her opponent took the set 6-4.
Genie will next head to Rome to play the Internazionali BNL d’Italia which begins next week.
