Genie is through to her first semi-final since September 2014 at the Hobart International after she upset No.2 seed Camila Giorgi of Italy. Genie won 6-3 6-2 in 68 minutes.
The match started after 10.00 PM due to rain throughout the day, earlier in the day Genie helped to dry the courts.
Genie came out firing and took a 3-0 lead, this lead was enough as she won three of the next six games to take the set 6-3. Giorgi got an early break in the second set but couldn’t maintain control as Genie won four games in a row and served it out at 5-2 to book her spot in the last four.
Genie talks about her win:
“I’m happy I was able to have a lot of energy considering how long we waited today. I just wanted to put her under pressure as much as possible,” she said of her game plan. She’s had great wins in the past, she can definitely play a really good game. It was definitely a solid win for me tonight.”
In Friday’s semi-final, Genie will face No.2 seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia at 2.30 PM on Centre Court. Genie has played the 26-year-old once before in the third round of the US Open in 2015 and won 7-6 4-6 6-3.
Genie talks about her opponent:
“It was my best match of last year I would say. I’m just looking forward to a great match, a great fight. She’s a big competitor out there and I don’t know what will happen, but I’ll try and enjoy it.”
