Genie is through to the quarters at the Mutua Madrid Open in Madrid, Spain after her opponent top seed Angelique Kerber of Germany retired with a left thigh injury. Genie was up 6-3 5-0 when the German retired.
This is the first time that Genie has reached a premier mandatory event quarter-final.
After the match, Genie said:
“All in all I’m very pleased.I felt I started off a little bit off ’cause the conditions were so different. It was cold. It was really windy from one side to the other, a strong wind. The atmosphere was different from my previous match. At the beginning I just felt a little bit out of it, a couple loose errors. But then after that, I got myself together and got my rhythm, felt pretty awesome out there.”
On Thursday evening, Genie will face No.8 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia. Genie has played the 31-year-old twice before and the two-time Grand Slam champion leads the series 2-0. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
2014 Oeiras QF: Kuznetsova won 6-4 6-1
2014 Cincinnati R2: Kuznetsova won 6-4 3-6 6-2
On playing Kuznetsova, Genie said:
“She’s playing well in general right now. Also I think she ended the year really, really well. It’s going to be a good battle. I’ve practiced with her before, played against her. I’ve always enjoyed it because she gets a lot of balls back, but she also goes for it. We both have just battled. I just want to have fun. I just want to enjoy it and just go for it, as usual.”
