Genie is through to her first semi-final of 2018 at the Ladies Championships Gstaad by Ixion Services in Gstaad, Switzerland after she defeated Russian qualifier Veronika Kudermetova.
Genie won 7-5 6-0 in an hour and 24 minutes as she provisionally moves up to 123 in the WTA rankings with 509 points.
After her win, Genie said:
“I just am happy to play another match. I’m not really comparing or thinking about the past. I just have a match tomorrow and it’s great. It’s about playing good tennis.
“It was very important for me to realize that even if she hit some big shots, I could hit some big shots, too. I had to really just counter well and take advantage, and I did that much better in the second set. I’m also especially proud of how I stayed focused after the treatment that she took.”
In Saturday’s semi-final, Genie will play No.1 seed Alize Cornet of France. Genie has played the 28-year-old five times before and leads the series 3-2. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
