Genie is through to the final at the Hobart International after a tough three-set battle over No.3 seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia. Genie won 6-1 4-6 6-4 in an hour and 59 minutes.
This is Genie’s first final since reaching the final in Wuhan in September 2014.
The first set lasted 22 minutes and Genie dropped only 10 points throughout the set.
On her level in the first set, Genie said:
“That was a great level for me, I can’t remember the last time I played that well.”
The second set was a lot closer as there were eight consecutive breaks of serve, Cibulkova held her serve to lead 5-4 and broke Genie to take the set 6-4. The quality improved in the final set as Genie needed just one break to reach her first final of 2016.
After the win, Genie said:
“I’m just happy I got through today. The first set was a great level for me – I can’t remember the last time I played that well. Now the important thing is to keep that consistency. It was hard to keep it up – it’s another lesson I’ve learned, to control my emotions a little bit better. I don’t think I held serve in the second set, which is absolutely disgusting – I’m so disappointed in myself for that. But she was really putting pressure on me with her returns out there today.”
In Saturday’s final to be played at 2.00 PM local time, Genie will play No.7 seed Alize Cornet of France. Genie has played the 25-year-old three times before and leads the series 2-1. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
2013 Strasbourg SF: Cornet won 7-5 6-7 6-3
2014 Wimbledon R4: Genie won 7-6 7-5
2014 Wuhan QF: Genie won 6-3 7-5
