Genie is through to the third round at the Australian Open after a 7-6 6-2 win over Shuai Peng of China. Genie won the match in an hour and 29 minutes for her second win over her Chinese opponent.
On the Hisense Arena, Genie started the match strongly as she led 2-0. In the eighth game, Genie’s opponent got the break back to level the set 4-4. The set was eventually decided by a tie-break which Genie won 7-5 on her second set point with a forehand winner.
The momentum Genie gained from taking a close first set continued in the second set as she took a 5-1 lead. In the next game, serving for the match at 40-0, Genie lost five straight points as her opponent broke serve. It proved to be a small blip for Genie as in the next game on Peng’s serve at 15-40, Genie hit a forehand return winner to book her spot in the last 32.
In Friday’s third round match, Genie will face world No.35 Coco Vandeweghe of the United States. Genie has played the 25-year-old once before at Indian Wells in the third round in 2015 and won 6-3 6-2.
