Genie didn’t waste any time as she won her first match at the Australian Open in Melbourne against Louisa Chirico of the United States. Genie won 6-0 6-4 in only 56 minutes as the match finished near midnight.
It took Genie only 18 minutes to take the first set 6-0.
The second set was closer but Genie was always in control as she took the decisive break in the third game and a forehand long by Chirico gave Genie her first win in the first Grand Slam of 2017.
In Wednesday’s second round, Genie will be up against world No.83 Shuai Peng of China. Genie has played the 31-year-old who has a career high ranking of 14, once before in 2014 at Indian Wells in the second round and won 6-2 6-2.
