After three straight first round losses at the Mutua Madrid Open in Madrid, Spain, Genie scored her first win on the red clay in the Spanish capital.
Genie defeated Alize Cornet of France 6-4 4-6 6-1 in just over two hours.
After defeating the Cornet, Genie said:
“I’m proud of myself, how I stepped up and I think played even better in the third set.Alize is such a fighter. S he doesn’t give you anything. It was a tough battle. It was my first match win in Madrid, so I’m very, very happy about that. Fourth time’s a charm.”
This is Genie’s first ever win in a WTA event since January.
In the second round, Genie will play either No.17 seed Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia or Maria Sharapova of Russia.
On the second round match, Genie said:
“I think they both play similar, aggressive tennis, but I hope I can play Maria. Once I step on the court, everything will be to the side. But, you know, inside myself, I think I’ll have a bit more motivation.“
