Genie upset No.16 seed Johanna Konta of Great Britain on Wimbledon’s Centre Court to advance to the third round. Genie won 6-3 1-6 6-1 in an hour and 46 minutes to advance to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time this year.
The first break of the match was by the British player in the third game but Genie immediately broke back in the next game to level the set 2-2. Genie got the decisive break of the set to lead 4-2 when her opponent hit a backhand error. At 5-3, Genie stepped up to serve for the set and won her serve to love and set point on a forehand error by her opponent.
Konta re-bounded in set two as she won the set 6-1.
Genie turned the match around in the third set as she raced into a 5-0 lead, Konta held her serve in the next game and on Genie’s serve at 5-1 40-30, Konta hit a forehand error as Genie booked her spot in the last 32.
After the match, Genie told the BBC: “It was very important I came out strongly in the third set. I was frustrated after the second set – she hits a big ball and played some good tennis. I had to play well and I did in the third set.”
In Saturday’s third round match, Genie will play No.19 seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia. Genie has played the 27-year-old who won Eastbourne on Saturday twice before and leads the series 2-0. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
