Genie started her Australian Open campaign in style after she scored a 6-3 6-4 win over Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia. The match lasted 66 minutes as Genie advanced to the second round.
In the first set, Krunic got the first break to lead 3-2 when Genie double-faulted but immediately got the break back in the next game to level the 3-3. Genie then won three games in a row to take the first set 6-3 in 26 minutes.
After a long deuce game in the third game, Genie finally broke when Krunic hit a backhand error to lead 2-1. The next games were all holds of serve and Genie won the match when Krunic hit an overhead out.
In one of the highlight matches of the early rounds, Genie will face No.4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in the second round. Genie has played the 26-year-old once before in the first round in Madrid in 2014 and Radwanska won 7-6 6-2.
