Genie came from a set down to advance to the second round of the Ladies Championships Gstaad by Ixion Services in Gstaad, Switzerland.
In the first round, Genie defeated Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland 4-6 7-6 6-4.
After the win, Genie said:
“It was just a battle. Even though she hasn’t played a lot this year, she has still been a Top 10 player and clay is her best surface, and she’s playing in Switzerland at home. All of the conditions were against me, so I just had to battle.
I’m always trying to play with confidence. A win is a win no matter what, and I’ll definitely get confidence from this. But I still have to try and keep raising my level. I know I haven’t been playing well this past week or this week in practice. Conditions are tough, and that’s just how it is. I’m still just trying to find my game.”
In the second round to be played on Thursday, Genie will face No.8 seed Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland. Genie has played the 25-year-old once before at Cincinnati in 2016 in the second round of qualifying and won 6-4 6-2.
