Genie’s run at the Australian Open in Melbourne is over after she lost a very close match to Coco Vandeweghe of the Unites States in the third round. Genie lost 4-6 6-3 5-7 in two hours and 21 minutes.
In the first set, Genie dropped her serve in the eighth game and her opponent was able to take advantage as she won the set 6-4.
Genie turned the match around in the second set as she broke Vandeweghe in the second game when her opponent double-faulted. Genie’s form continued throughout the set as she took it 6-3 when her opponent hit a backhand long.
The third set started strongly for Genie as she broke to love in the first game. At 4-3, Genie lost her advantage as Vandeweghe broke to level the set 4-4. After some long games, Vandeweghe got the decisive break in the final game of the match to take the set and match 7-5.
The Qatar Total Open in Doha will be Genie’s next tournament in February.
